Utilizing Vacuum Impregnation to Seal Castings

Vacuum impregnation sealing at Magna-Tech Manufacturing, a Henkel company, is most effective on porous substrates such as metal castings and powdered metal components required to meet pressure retention specifications, or to improve machinability or finish quality of the part. Candidates for impregnation include parts manufactured to contain gases or liquids and parts that will be plated or coated with a surface finish. Parts can be impregnated in the as-cast or in the machined state.

Porosity (micro-voids of trapped air) is common in nearly all metal castings and powdered metal applications. Over time, these micro-voids can lead to leak paths and, ultimately, to part failure.

We provide batch and single part processing for parts requiring vacuum impregnation. Parts are submitted to a vacuum chamber where the air in the microscopic voids within the casting wall is evacuated. When the vacuum is released, the voids are filled with impregnation sealant (resin).

Some of our processes may incorporate pressure at the end of the cycle, driving the resin deeper into the part. After the vacuum impregnation cycle is complete, polymerization of the resin occurs either in the absence of air (anaerobic) or in the presence of heat (thermal cure). Regardless of the cure method, all resin on exterior surfaces will be removed in a series of aqueous washes.

The vacuum impregnation process fills and permanently seals the porosity networks of the part. Because of the impregnation process, surface applications like metal plating and painting are enhanced. Future blistering, out-gassing, and discoloration are eliminated with impregnation.

The use of vacuum impregnation adds up to financial savings for the metals caster and/or the end user by reducing labor costs in order to save parts that would otherwise be scrapped.
